About Parc national de la Mauricie

Located in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, Parc national de la Mauricie covers a large area of boreal forest, rugged lakes, and gentle hills. Established in 1970, the park protects over 536 square kilometers of wilderness characterized by a network of glacial lakes, dense mixed woodlands, and diverse wildlife. Ecologically, the park is home to species such as moose, black bear, beaver, and numerous bird species including loons and owls. The landscape features rocky outcrops, scenic waterfalls, and virgin forest stands that attract nature lovers and adventurers alike. Historically, the area was significant for the fur trade and logging through the 19th and early 20th centuries, traces of which remain in the form of old logging roads and industry artifacts. Recreational activities are centered on hiking a variety of trails ranging from short interpretive paths to multi-day treks, canoeing on interconnected lakes and rivers, wildlife viewing, and winter sports including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Popular areas within the park include Wapizagonke Lake, known for its clear waters and canoe routes, as well as the Les Cascades sector famed for its waterfalls and scenic views. The park has several campgrounds and rustic refuges, providing options from frontcountry camping to backcountry experiences. Its proximity to the town of Trois-Rivières and accessibility by car make it a favored destination for both day visitors and extended stays seeking tranquil natural surroundings in the heart of Quebec.
